The Chequer appeared to be heading
for defeat in their first league game. With 10 Players
unavailable through injury and work commitments &
two in bed with hangovers, we had to play the first 35
minutes of this game with ten men. Town made the most
of of their extra man and scored twice in the first twenty
minutes, taking advantage of a makeshift side without
a single member of it's regular defence or forward line.
Woeful defending saw Town score from high balls into the
box, one from a set piece, the other a hopeful punt upfield.
Rather than letting the
second goal demoralise them, The Chequer seemed to galvanise
and, despite being a man short, began to keep possession
of the ball and carve out a couple of openings. They were
rewarded in the 35th minute with an incisive run and finish
from Si Price to bring the score to 2-1. Shortly afterwards
the arrival of Lewis & Warren Partridge enabled us
to strengthen to 11 players with a recognisable forward
line. The defence had also come to an understanding and
looked far more solid, and we began to dominate possession
in midfield.
The second half was a much
better reflection of The Chequer's abilities. With Ben
Garman bossing midfield and Matt Laker & Tom Pickford
nullifying the Town forward line, an equaliser was a matter
of time. It arrived early in the second half with Aaron
Comber breaking from left midfield to poach from 5 yards
after good work from Si Price & Warren Partridge.
The winner arrived after 70 minutes, Warren heading in
from 4 yards.
Town had a couple
of opportunities to level the game during the second half,
and played some good passing football. The Chequer however,
having battled hard for 35 minutes with 10 men were deserved
winners on the day.
