Chequer's title ambitions suffered
a hefty blow after a late, late winner for lancing Empire
left us with nothing to take from the game.
Empire were much improved
from two weeks ago and dominated much of the first half.
Chequer fell behind early on when Empire struck from distance,
but were soon level through an own goal. Empire took the
lead again before Chequer once more equalised - a fine
goal from Aaaron Comber - to leave the game evenly balanced
at 2-2 at half time.
Chequer were under pressure
in the first ten of the second half, but took the lead
from a Tom Pickford penalty. This seemed to take the sting
out of Empire and Chequer gradually began to take control
of the game. However with under 10 minutes remaining the
game was turned on it's head when Empire scored a scorcher
from a seemingly impossible angle fully 18 yards out on
the left wing.
Empire began to sense they
could steal a winner, which is exactly what they did with
a minute of play left. From a corner, Keeper Matt Bailey
was clearly impeded in his attempt to punch the ball away
- he was bundled into the back of the net just as he was
about to reach the ball to leave empire an open goal to
head into to steal all three points. How the goal stood
is beyond comprehension.
Chequer must now win
at John Henry's to remain in this year's title race as
defeat would leave us 8 points adrift and open the race
up to Rustington Sports, AC Azzurri and Goring Thistle.
