Revenge truly is sweet! Although Chequer
have lost several games this season, on only one occassion
had we felt we were outplayed and deserved nothing from
the match - in our 6-2 defeat at Beckett a few weeks back,
when with a weak side we were totally outplayed and on
the end of a sound thrashing. With a stronger squad available
today a similar result was unlikely, but we never expected
to defeat Beckett so comprehensively, and had Warren Partridge
been on form in the first half we could easily have reached
double figures.
Chequer were dominant in
all departments, and Wanderers, admittedly fielding a
weaker side, were outplayed from first to last. Despite
the dominance, Chequer only led 1-0 at the break - a superbly
taken goal by Aaron Comber who rounded the keeper before
slotting home from 10 yards five minutes before the break.
Warren Partridge had contrived to miss a penalty and four
golden one-on-one opportunities in the first half hour,
so a solitary goal seemed a poor return for the effort
on display.
This was rectified by an
outstanding second half by the entire team in which we
continued to tear Beckett apart. Tom Pickford & Adam
Searle won nigh on everything in the centre of the park
and carved out numerous chances for Warren and Aaaron.
Warren added two second half goals including an unstoppable
20 yard left foot finish, and man of the match Aaron,
who only returned from a skiing holiday the previous night,
added a further two well taken goals to bag himself a
hat-trick. Sean Hourigan converted a penalty somewhere
in between these strikes after a clear foul on Tom Pickford.
Lewis cracked the crossbar with a venomous thirty yard
drive and Trevor Yearwood was unlucky that a high bounce
denied him the chance to score late on after a performance
full of running.
The back four can consider
themselves unlucky not to have kept a clean sheet today,
as they kept the Wanderers front line very subdued. Wanderers
consolation goal in the 88th minute was going nowhere
until it took a wicked deflection off Gareth's outstretched
leg.
Probably our best
performance of the season and everyone involved can be
proud of their efforts today. If we had played this well
all season we would be genuine title contenders.
