Chequer took all three points and kept
their first clean sheet of the season on Sunday, despite
having to play for fifty minutes with only ten men after
Ben Garman's dismissal.
In what was not a dirty
contest, today's referee, notorious for being card-happy,
lived up to his reputation by booking Simon Friend-James
within a minute of kick off for failing to retreat from
a free-kick.
Chequer dominated the opening
spell, helped by a very strong wind in their favour. Chequer
were rewarded for their early dominance on twenty minutes
when George Trafford cut in from right midfield to beat
three players with superb close control, before slotting
past the keeper from eight yards.
The referee then did his
best to spoil the contest. Worthing Town were awarded
a penalty when Richard Wilkie was adjudged to have held
back a Town forward as a corner was delivered. Chequer's
player-manager was furious, having at worst been guilty
of obstruction and talked himself into a booking by arguing
with the referee about the decision. Justice of sorts
was done when Town fired the penalty wide of Matt's right
post.
On forty minutes, the ref pushed the balance in favour
of Town with Ben's dismissal. He was booked for a late
tackle, and having learnt nothing from his manager's booking,
backchatted the ref, only to see the red card brandished!
George Trafford dropped
back to centre half and Aaron Comber to right midfield
to leave Si Price up front alone.
In the second half Chequer
had to survive an onslaught of attacks from Town who were
now a man to the good with a strong wind behind them.
James Davis though was immense, and Simon Friend-James
and Adam Searle screened the back four brilliantly. Trevor
Yearwood was also full of running on the right having
replaced the injured Aaron Comber.
Despite their pressure,
the closest Town came to scoring was when left back Lewis
Partridge thumped a clearance against his own bar from
a corner.
Si Price did a superb job up on his own in the second
half, his intricate skills and strength allowing him to
hold the ball up and run at defenders and relieve the
pressure on the over-worked Chequer back line, and he
shares the M.O.M honours with James Davis today.
