Chequer dominated this match from the
first to the eightieth minute, yet came away two-nil losers.
Chequer must have had fifteen efforts on target, but failed
to convert any of their chances, including several one
on ones, while Thistle had only three efforts on target
all game, yet scored twice. Who said the best team always
wins?
Chequer should have been
three up, when Thistle took the lead. Richard Wilkie's
attempted headed clearance, glanced the wrong way to put
the Thistle front line through, Tom Pickford, who was
excellent at centre half slipped as he challenged and
his clearance went straight back to Thistle. Matt Bailey
parried the first attempt well, but was powerless to prevent
the tap in.
Throughout the rest of the
half and all through the second half, Chequer continued
to dominate possession and chances. Si Price was particularly
impressive in the centre of midfield, and was unlucky
to see a thirty yard snap-shot hit the crossbar. Unfortunately
despite our dominance Warren and Chris had left their
shooting boots at home today, though the miss of the day
goes to Sean Hourigan who decided to pass the ball back
to their keeper when unmarked eight yards out!!
Thistle threatened in the
last fifteen minutes, when they had brought on a pacey
forward. Rightback Richard Wilkie was coping well with
his speed, but when he pulled up with a calf strain, Chequer,
having used their only sub, found it difficult to reorganise
defensively, and the same forward killed the game off
with two minutes to go, when he skinned Adam Searle and
slotted past Matt.
We had blown our chances
at finishing in the top three with shocking perfomances
in the run up to Christmas, so the result is unimportant,
but it is galling all the same to outplay your opponents
and finish with nothing.
