Our fourth meeting with Wanderers this season, and for
the third time we came away victors by just one goal.
Beckett started the match brightly, with
crisp passing and movement and deservedly took the lead
in the first 15 minutes when a perfectly weighted through
ball found a Beckett Forward unmarked who finished past
David Kennett from 8 yards.
Chequer though did not let the goal dishearten
them and began to take the game to Beckett. Si Price gave
their back line numerous problems with his trickery, and
Danny Gainsford and Gareth Dutton began to get a hold
of central midfield.
Chequer appeared to equalise on the half
hour, when a quickly taken corner by mark Friend-James
was volleyed powerfully home from fully 18 yards by Lewis
Partridge for what would have been a contender for our
goal of the season. The effort was ruled out though because
of a dog which had strayed on to the pitch and distracted
the Beckett defence.
Chequer soon made up for this, with an
equaliser from Mark Friend-James. Si Price cut in from
the right, beating 2 defenders, and Mark, though closed
down by 2 Beckett players somehow dinked a lovely curling
left foot shot past their keeper from 12 yards.
Chequer had the better of the game, but
could not find a finishing touch until the 81st minute,
when an incisive pass from Tom Pickford found Si Price
unmarked; As he advanced in to the Beckett 18 yard box,
their keeper recklessly dived in feet forward and bought
him down for a definite penalty. Si scored the spot kick
himself to put us 2-1 ahead. This was increased to 3-1
just two minutes later when he added his second goal of
the game, and with three minutes left the game appeared
to be over.
Chequer though, as ever, made life difficult
for themselves. Gareth Dutton, who had dropped in to defence
made a late challenge from behind and received his second
yellow card and his marching orders. From the resulting
free kick, Beckett worked a very clever free kick - after
2 step overs everyone expected a shot but the ball was
pushed wide to find an unmarked Beckett player who had
a simple finish from five yards.
Beckett pushed everyone including their
keeper forward after winning a corner in the last minute,
but Chequer held firm and came away with three deserved
points.
