The Chequer are fortunate to have strength
in depth this season. With six changes to the starting
line-up from the last match, and missing several key players,
the team performed superbly to ease to a comfortable 5-1
victory. The chequer fell behind early on when player-manager
Richard Wilkie mistimed a challenge just inside the 18
yard area to concede a penalty inside 2 minutes of the
kick off, which was duly converted.
Lewis Partridge quickly
brought The Chequer back into the game with a stunning
left foot drive from 25 yards to level the scores within
5 minutes. The goal settled the team who dominated possession
throughout the rest of the half cruising to a 4-1 half
time lead. Trevor Yearwood added the second with a well
taken volley. The third came from a close range strike
by Warren Partridge after superb work by man-of-the-match
Si Price, who managed to beat 5 players before slipping
a defence splitting ball into the box. Si Price himself
added the 4th shortly before half time.
Ajax started the second
half the more lively side and brought a superb reflex
stop out of keeper Matt Bailey inside 5 minutes of the
restart and exposed gaps in the left side of The Chequer
Defence on two further occasions in quick succession,
and we can count ourselves lucky not to have conceded
in this period. However, despite the side losing it's
shape for the early part of the second half a 5th goal
was added by George Trafford, who broke from central midfield
with the ball, beat two defenders and slotted firmly and
cooly past the Ajax Keeper.
Manager Richard Wilkie then
substituted himself to avoid what would have been an inevitable
booking having been involved in several incidents throughout
the game to bring Rick Nash on, who was unlucky not to
add to the tally when stretching with his left foot from
a superb cross by Si Price soon afterwards.
The Chequer were rarely
troubled for the rest of the half with Gareth Dutton and
Steve Duffet nullifying the Ajax forward line and Si Price
and George Trafford tormenting Ajax with their ability
to skip past defenders with ease. Praise also to Sean
Hourigan who worked tirelessly in the centre of midfield
despite beinng crippled with blisters.
